The
Garden Club planted Becky Shasta Daisies at the entrance the day
before Memorial Day. In addition, they planted a Saybrook Juniper
in the center monument recently along with two columnar junipers
and several other spreaders. Here is a photo of several Garden Club
members, Orville and Mike, caught in the act of planting:

John
and Joyce Cessna plan to invite the Garden Club for an "Evening
at Zenpond", their backyard of ponds and waterfalls, sometime
in June. The website for zenpond is: www.zenpond.com
Several
meetings of the Garden Club have taken place since the last posting
on this page.
Al Hussar has volunteered to be the Garden Club Coordinator (381-2414).
The last meeting was at Anne and Al Hussar's home. John Martin,
Master Gardener, spoke about composting. This is a subject that
will become more dear as Johnson County decrees that yard waste
will no longer be put into the landfill.
Here's
the take away from John's talk:
The
five items involved in good composting are:
M
- Mass. A size of about 4' x 4' x 4' is recommended. Start with
a full mass, and do not add new material to the mass. Start a
new mass instead.
M
- Material. Green and brown yard waste is alternately layered
in 4 inch layers.
M
- Moisture. Compositing will not occur unless the mass is kept
moist at about a dry spounge level.
A
- Air. The compositing mass must get air.
T
- Time. Yard waste will become compost in about six months. The
mass will be reduced to about 1/3 the original amount.
If
you decide to do your own compositing -
Call
the Master Gardener Extension Center (715-7000) and ask for publication
#MF-1053, "Making and Using Compost at Home".
The
Master Garden Extension Center is selling a composite mesh bin
for those wishing to do their own composting.
Your
BEHA board will work with you to assure you do your compositing
properly. Remember your neighbors, and keep your compositing
out of sight and unsmelly!
John
Martin indicated that it is not wise to add kitchen scraps to
your compost heap. This will only result in your compost smelling
and will attact animals to it!
The
first meeting of the Garden Club, on August 23rd, was an overwhelming
success!
Three families volunteered to serve on the Garden Club committee:
Veronica Ventura, Tanya and Herb Likte,
and Joel and Lana Reiz.
The people attending voted to make the meetings "seasonal":
i.e., fewer in the winter, more during the growing seasons. The
committee will decide the details of the next meeting.
Veronica Ventura took the surveys filled out by the attendees
to compile them. If you are interested in joining the Garden Club,
please contact one of the committee members above.
